Tachograph message 54

Message 54 doesn't mean the tachograph is broken. It's a signal about how your driver card was handled, and about the gap that can appear in your record.

Short answer

What it means: the tachograph flags an event around removing the driver card.

The risk: a gap in your record if activity away from the vehicle isn't entered manually.

Can you keep driving: yes, this is not an equipment fault.

What message 54 means

Unlike faults 40 and 41, message 54 is not an equipment breakdown. It relates to the driver card being taken out, and whether the required manual entry was made for the time you were away from the vehicle.

Why this can leave a gap in your record

When, as a result of being away from the vehicle, a driver is unable to use the tachograph fitted to the vehicle, the periods of time referred to in points (ii), (iii) and (iv) of paragraph 5(b) shall: (a) if the vehicle is fitted with an analogue tachograph, be entered on the record sheet, either manually, by automatic recording or other means, legibly and without dirtying the record sheet; or (b) if the vehicle is fitted with a digital tachograph, be entered onto the driver card using the manual entry facility provided for in the tachograph.

Regulation (EU) No 165/2014, Article 34(3)(b). Accessed 26 August 2026.

In plain terms: if you leave the vehicle without the tachograph, for example to load somewhere else or to take a break away from the cab, that time still has to be accounted for. When you reinsert your card, the tachograph asks you to enter it manually. Skip that step, and there's a gap in your record with no explanation attached to it.

Can you keep driving

Yes. This is not the same situation as a genuine equipment fault under Article 37, so the repair deadlines that apply to faults 40 and 41 don't apply here.

How to fill the gap

When prompted after reinserting your card, use the manual entry function to log what you were doing during the time away: other work, availability, or a break, as the regulation's categories require. Do this at the moment you're prompted, not later from memory.

What this message is not

It is not proof of manipulation, and it is not an equipment breakdown. It is a routine prompt tied to a specific handling event. Treating it as a fault to be repaired misunderstands what it flags.

What a control officer sees

A control officer checking your record sees whether the manual entry was made correctly for the time the card was out. An unexplained gap draws more attention than a gap that's been filled in with the right category, even if the underlying activity was entirely legitimate.

What it costs

Nothing, if you fill in the manual entry when prompted. The cost only appears if an unexplained gap turns up at a roadside check, and that cost is a national enforcement matter, not something the regulation itself prices.
