Tachograph fault 96

Code 96 isn't a routine breakdown. It flags a mismatch in position data that the system treats as a possible sign of interference, and that changes how it's checked.

Short answer

What message 96 means

A smart tachograph continuously compares the vehicle's actual position, from its own GNSS receiver, against the motion data it records independently. Code 96 appears when those two don't line up in a way the system can't explain by a simple signal gap. That mismatch is exactly the pattern a jammed or spoofed GNSS signal would produce, which is why the system flags it as a manipulation indicator rather than a plain fault.

Why a control officer looks at this differently

Faults 40, 41 and 82 are treated as equipment problems: something broke, it gets fixed, that's the end of it. Code 96 sits in a different category because the regulation's enforcement framework exists specifically to catch attempts to falsify recorded data.

It shall be forbidden to falsify, conceal, suppress or destroy data recorded on the record sheet or stored in the tachograph or on the driver card, or print-outs from the tachograph. Any manipulation of the tachograph, record sheet or driver card which could result in data and/or printed information being falsified, suppressed or destroyed shall also be prohibited.

Code 96 on its own is not proof that anything was falsified. It's a flag that prompts closer scrutiny, an honest GNSS glitch produces the same code as deliberate interference, and it's up to a proper technical check to tell them apart. Don't assume the worst, but don't ignore it either.

Can you keep driving

In the event of the breakdown or faulty operation of a tachograph, the transport undertaking shall have it repaired by an approved fitter or workshop, as soon as circumstances permit. If the vehicle is unable to return to the transport undertaking's premises within a period of one week calculated from the day of the breakdown or of the discovery of defective operation, the repair shall be carried out en route.

Yes, the same repair deadline applies as for any tachograph malfunction. Given the extra scrutiny this code invites, treat the one-week window as a ceiling, not a target, get it looked at sooner if you can.

What to log right away

While the tachograph is unserviceable or malfunctioning, the driver shall mark data enabling him to be identified (name, driver card or driving licence number), including a signature, as well as the information for the various periods of time which are no longer recorded or printed out correctly by the tachograph: (a) on the record sheet or sheets, or (b) on a temporary sheet to be attached to the record sheet or to be kept together with the driver card.

Log it the same way as any other fault: your name, driver card or licence number, signature, and the driving times affected. A clear, contemporaneous manual record is exactly what distinguishes an honest fault from something a control officer would need to investigate further.

Who has to fix it, and by when

Your transport undertaking arranges the repair through an approved fitter or workshop. Given that code 96 relates to the anti-manipulation system, the workshop will typically run diagnostics on the GNSS module rather than a simple component swap, so build in a little more time than for a routine fault.

What it costs

The regulation doesn't set a price, and diagnosis for a manipulation-indicator code can take longer than a standard repair. Keep your manual record and any workshop documentation until you're certain the matter is closed.
