Italy truck driving ban: all 2026 dates

There isn't one time, there are eight. Below is every ban day with its own time window, straight from the decree, with the date we last checked it.

Short answer

Who: goods vehicles over 7.5 tonnes maximum authorised mass. Also agricultural machinery and abnormal loads, even with a permit.

Where: on all roads outside built-up areas, motorways included. Inside built-up areas the national ban doesn't apply.

When: on 79 days in 2026, across eight different time windows. Sundays in winter 9:00-22:00, in summer 7:00-22:00, plus individual Saturdays and Friday evenings.

Why the hours keep changing

A lot of sites give one fixed time. That's wrong. The decree sets out eight different time windows, and which one applies depends on the date.

From January to May the Sunday ban starts at 9am. From June it starts at 7am and stays that way until the end of September. From October it's back to 9am. It always ends at 10pm.

Then there are days that don't fit this pattern at all. Saturdays in July mostly end as early as 4pm, 1 and 8 August run until 10pm, and on a few Fridays in July and August the ban doesn't start until 4pm. Drive by feel and sooner or later you'll drive straight into one.

Where the ban applies, and where it doesn't

Article 1(1) says it literally: the decree governs the bans «sulle strade extraurbane», meaning on roads outside built-up areas. Motorways are included, since nowhere in the text is there an exception for them.

You can show this from the decree itself. Article 7 expressly narrows two exemptions by excluding motorway sections from them. That restriction would be meaningless if motorways weren't covered by the ban in the first place.

Inside built-up areas the national ban doesn't apply. Municipal rules can apply there instead, see below.

Who isn't affected

One exception that matters often in practice sits in Article 1(6): the calendar doesn't apply to tractor units driving solo, on the way back to base or on the way to couple up a semi-trailer.

The decree also has shifted timings for vehicles arriving from abroad or from a port, plus a number of exemptions. These come with conditions and documents you have to carry. For any specific case, the text of the decree governs, not a summary.

Dangerous goods: stricter than the rest

For ADR class 1 and class 7, a separate, stricter regime applies. Article 12(1) bans this transport regardless of quantity and regardless of vehicle mass, so even under 7.5 tonnes.

And not only on the calendar days above, but additionally every Saturday from 8am to midnight and every Sunday from midnight to midnight in the period from 23 May to 6 September 2026.

South Tyrol, Aosta Valley and the low-emission zones

South Tyrol explicitly extends the national calendar to the A22 Brenner motorway. A truck that would legally be on an Italian motorway on a banned Sunday is not allowed on the A22 through South Tyrol. On top of that come its own closure days towards the state border from Vipiteno, the next ones on 5, 12, 19 and 26 September 2026, each from 7am to 3pm.

Aosta Valley has a rule almost nobody knows, and it works across the border. The moment a driving ban applies in France, even if it only covers the Haute-Savoie département, and no ban applies in Italy at the same time, access to the Mont Blanc tunnel is automatically closed: the A5, SS26 and SS26 dir, for vehicles heading abroad through the tunnel that aren't allowed to enter France.

Low-emission zones are a different thing from the calendar. A lot of incorrect information circulates here. In Lombardy older diesels are restricted, but only within built-up areas; motorways and main connecting roads are excluded. Pure transit via the A4, A1 or A21 isn't affected. In Emilia-Romagna a restriction on diesels up to Euro 4 applies from October to March, in Piedmont year-round for Euro 0 to 2. Liguria only affects light vehicles, nothing over 3.5 tonnes.

We deliberately say nothing here about the Province of Trento. We weren't able to open an official decree for it, and we'd rather not guess.

What it costs

The offence is penalised under the Italian highway code, at €430 to €1,731. These amounts are unchanged because the usual two-yearly adjustment has been suspended through 2026.

That's set to change: the adjustment decree is due to be issued by 1 December 2026, for amounts applying from 1 January 2027. Anyone reading this page later should check the amount again.
